This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime had a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
