The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
