Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
